Quran and Science: Two oceans meet but do not mix?

There are numerous miracles in this world that prove the existence of God. One of these miracles is the Qur’an itself. It was revealed to the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

“He released the two seas, meeting (side by side); between them is a barrier (so) neither of them transgresses.” Surah Al-Rahman 55:19–20.

The Ayat says that there are two waters, salty and sweet, which meet together without transgression. The Arabic word barzakh means “barrier”. Modern science has proven that there is indeed a barrier between the Seas, a fact mentioned in the Holy Quran 14 centuries ago.

There are several reasons why this happens. Salinity, temperature, and density of the water might be among them.

All other Ayahs of the Qur’an indicate that the Qur’an is the word of Allah; therefore, this Ayah also indicates the Qur’an is His word. It was revealed fourteen centuries ago when science was not fully developed as it is today. Modern science has recently discovered this truth.

Two seas meet but don’t mix

There is no doubt about the fact that the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean do not mix. However, this does not mean that they cannot share the same water. In fact, they do not mix because of various factors including salinity, temperature, and density. For instance, the Mediterranean Sea is warmer than the North Atlantic Ocean. Salinity and density also play an important role in this process.

Scholars have interpreted the Qur’an’s description of the barrier between sea and land differently. One view holds that the barrier refers to the distance between two bodies of water. Another interpretation states that the barrier is between land and seawater. In both cases, the barrier prevents the mixing of fresh and saltwater. However, the water of smaller bodies does mix with ocean waters.

Barzakh as in Quran

Another view about the Barzakh or barrier relates to the Gulf Of Alaska. Two oceans are coming together but not mixing in a place in the Gulf of Alaska. Modern science has found and explained the reason for that phenomenon. The freshness of the water and the salinity of the water are the main factors which act as the barrier. The differences in the salinity and the density of these waters act as a thin wall which prevents the two water bodies from mixing.

One can easily understand from the evidence given above that many of the writers of the Qur’an describe the barrier in the Quran in the same manner. In another verse, God says, “One palatable and sweet, And the other salty and bitter.”(Quran 25:53).

In conclusion, it has been proven that God has revealed the existence of water bodies that do not mix together in many places throughout the Qur’an. These discoveries were made only recently, and they are among many signs confirming the divine origin of the Qur’anic message. Science has also found out about these things, and there are various explanations for them.
