Hair loss among Men and Women happens due to a lot of reasons. Some ailments are curable and some are not.
Islam deals with every aspect of Human lives including hygiene. Islam also gives certain guidelines for maintaining ones hair.
From Bukhari Shareef and other authentic books we know that, Prophet Muhammad SAWS took good care of his hair.
Narrated Salman-Al-Farsi: The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his hair oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumua prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven.
From the tradition of the Prophet PBUH and his companions we learn certain guidelines for maintaining hair and medications to prevent hair loss.
1. Using Henna
The Prophet SAWS and his companions used Henna to dye their hairs. It is a natural plant based product and has various benefits for hair growth.
Narrated Anas: (the servant of the Prophet) When the Prophet arrived (at Medina), there was not a single companion of the Prophet who had grey and black hair except Abu Bakr, and he dyed his hair with Henna’ and Katam (i.e. plants used for dying hair).
2. Using Coconut Oil or Mustard Oil
The Prophet SAWS used to apply Oil in his hair frequently. People who use oil have healthy growing hair.
A’isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that when the Messenger of Allah ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) intended to enter upon the state of Ihram he perfumed himself with the best of perfumes which he could find and after that I saw the glistening of oil on his head and beard.
3. Give Charity
Sometimes Hair ailments could also be due to some spiritual illnesses. The Prophet SAWS recommended giving Charity, feeding the Poor, offering a Sacrificing and Fasting to cure such ailments.
Narrated Ka`b bin Ujra: We were in the company of Allah’s Apostle at Al-Hudaibiya in the state of Ihram and the pagans did not allow us to proceed (to the Ka`ba). I had thick hair and lice started falling on my face. The Prophet passed by me and said, Are the lice of your head troubling you? I replied, Yes. (The sub-narrator added, Then the following Divine Verse was revealed:– And if anyone of you is ill or has an ailment in his scalp, (necessitating shaving) must pay a ransom (Fida) of either fasting or feeding the poor, Or offering a sacrifice. (2.196)
4. Artificial Wigs are Haram
Islam recommends using all natural methods to cure ailments related to the Hair and also forbids all unnatural or artificial ways to lengthen Hair or cure Hairfall. An authentic Hadith from Bukhari Shareef confirms the same.
Narrated `Aisha: An Ansari girl was married and she became sick and all her hair fell out intending to provide her with false hair. They asked the Prophet who said, Allah has cursed the lady who artificially lengthens (her or someone else’s) hair and also the one who gets her hair lengthened.
5. Use Hijama for Hair Growth
Hijama is known to regulate bloodflow in the body and remove impurities from the skin and blood. When the Blood circulation is good the hair growth is also increased naturally. The Hormones related to various body functions are also regulated.
Hijama is also an important Sunnah of the Prophet PBUH and has proven to have many health benefits other than Hair Growth.
6. Avoid Unnatural Cures
Cures like injecting Hormones or Transplanting Hair from other places or Using a Wig may fall under unnatural treatment.
The scholars of Islam give a fatwa based on the needs of the individual. But the general understanding is that unnatural treatment is Haram in Islam.
It is recommended to consult a Dermatologist to actually find out the reason for Hair fall. When you know the causes, it is easier to treat hair fall.
Islam allows any medication that is within the bounds of Shariah. That means any medication that is natural is recommended and any cure that is unnatural is strictly forbidden.
